Piercing Aftercare: Taking Care Of Your Piercing

Piercing Aftercare: Taking Care Of Your Piercing

If you have decided to get your new piercing done by a talented and experienced piercer than you are already on the right track. Whether it’s small piercings or larger ones, the safety, skill and responsibility should always be left in the hands of a trained professional. Nearly one third of piercings have some sort of complication that is due largely in part to either getting it done by someone who is inexperienced or the person doesn’t follow the advice given by the piercer. Proper piercing aftercare can also make the difference between a successful or unsuccessful piercing.

Here’s What You Can Expect from your new piercing

At first, it is normal that you may experience some bleeding, bruising, swelling, and some soreness, this is all expected during the piercing aftercare process. During the healing process your skin is beginning to tighten around the jewelry as you heal which may lead to some discolouration, itching or some whitish-yellowish fluid. Again, this is all normal. If the pain begins to become severe, than you should get back in touch with your piercer. Keep in mind as well that different people and different parts of the body heal faster than others. If your friends lobe piercing completely healed in two weeks, it doesn’t mean your navel piercing should be healed in a similar timeline. An experienced piercer will be able to give you a healing timeframe that applies specifically to your piercing.

Body Piercing Type

  • Ear lobe piercings --> six to eight weeks
  • Ear cartilage piercings -->four months to a year
  • Eyebrow piercings --> six to eight weeks
  • Nostril piercings --> two to four months
  • Nasal septum piercings --> six to eight weeks
  • Nasal bridge piercings --> eight to ten weeks
  • Tongue piercings --> roughly four weeks
  • Lip piercings --> two to three months
  • Nipple piercings -->three to six months
  • Naval piercings --> four months to one year
  • Female genitalia piercings --> four to ten weeks
  • Male genitalia piercings --> four weeks to six months
  • Cheek piercings --> four to five months
* Different people heal faster than others. These are general estimates.

Proper Piercing Aftercare Instructions

We don’t have to remind you that once your new piece of jewelry is in your body that the process isn’t over. Please review the following simple aftercare procedures to properly take care of the sensitive area of skin.
  1. Follow the Instructions
The first instruction you need to follow is to follow the instructions. You never want to risk an infection or any discomfort just because you didn’t adhere to the instructions given by your piercer. Stick to the following script and you will find the healing process much easier.
  1. Hands Off!
One of the most important aspects of piercing aftercare. It’s important you touch the specific area as little as possible. Perhaps it is our human nature to obsessively touch our new piercings, but it is a habit unfortunately too many people can’t seem to shake. Your need time to give your skin the proper time to heal and too much touching can irritate the sensitive area and prolong the healing process. If you do end up touching the area, please make sure your hands are clean.
  1. Clean Your Piercing Properly.
Our most recommended method of cleaning the new sensitive is using spray cleaners. Using cotton swabs or any other method that involves contact with the skin isn’t as ideal as a spray solution. It’s also preferred that you use all natural cleaners with no added chemicals or preservatives. Make sure you also don’t overclean the area as well. Remember that too much contact with the healing skin makes it more likely to prolong the healing process.
  1. Careful now!
We see a lot of clients that come back to us with problems because they caught, tugged, or snagged their new ear piercing in their sweater, or had a little too much fun the night before and can’t explain what happened to their brand new eyebrow ring. Always use extra precautions when your going through your piercing aftercare process, try to sleep in a certain position and try not to put yourself in any vulnerable position that may negatively impact the area around your new jewelry.
