STAR TATTOO MEANINGS AND DESIGNS

1. NAUTICAL STARS

MEANING

Nautical stars, also known as compass stars, are a design that was used by sailors to represent guidance throughout the night. Especially before modern navigation systems, nautical stars represent protection, guidance, safety, and faith that they will get to where they intend to go.

DESIGN

Nautical stars are typically shown as a black and white, three-dimensional star that either stands alone as a geometrical star, or is placed within a circle to represent a compass for guidance and safety.

2. SHOOTING STARS

MEANING

Shooting stars represent luck and fortune. Sometimes referred to as falling stars, the shooting star tattoo signifies the desire to successfully achieve a goal, dream, or wish.

DESIGN

These designs are usually placed around a specific passion or goal. For example, a musician may represent their desire to achieve a musical goal with a tattoo of a music note surrounded by shooting stars. They are also popular as standalone tattoo designs for the general representation of success. Chronic Ink - Stars on Ankle Tattoo

3. TRIBAL STARS

MEANING

These are one of the most popular types of star tattoos as they represent the history of one’s culture and background. Tribal tattoos are also the oldest known design in the star family as they signify a strong passion for historical cultures.

DESIGN

Tribal stars are generally constructed of geometrical lines and extremely popular when it comes to being able to personalize each star.

4. PENTAGRAM STARS

MEANING

Pentagram Stars are one of the most interesting types of stars. Despite mainstream belief, they are not necessarily representative of satanic culture or belief. In fact, the pentagram has been adopted by death metal and other subcultures over the years. Pentagrams can represent life and darkness, but also magic and evil. Pentagram Stars have been used all around the world in many different ancient cultures and faiths. The position of this star is important, too. If facing upward, it symbolizes balance and protection. If facing downward, it was often seen as a representation of evil and dark.

DESIGN

Pentagrams are five-pointed stars that are constructed with overlapping and intertwining lines. They are sometimes designed to be sitting on top of a circle which generally represents Paganism and their use of nature, life, and the 5 elements of life: earth, water, air, fire, and spirit.

5. CELTIC STARS

MEANING

Celtic Stars represent one’s heritage as well as interconnectedness and infinity. This star represents three different aspects of life. The first aspect is the father, son, and the Holy Spirit. The second aspect is life, death, and rebirth. The third aspect is mind, body, and spirit. No matter which aspect is important to you, they all represent infinity and life connection.

DESIGN

The Celtic star design is a star that is generally done in all black ink with connected lines that are weaved together like a knot to create the shape of a star.

6. SMALL STAR

MEANING

A small star tattoo does not necessarily have a small meaning. A small star tattoo symbolizes protection and guidance as it represents the North Star that was used to guide slaves to freedom. Generally speaking, a small star symbolizes protection on a path to a better life.

DESIGN

This tattoo can be placed anywhere, but is known to stay in smaller, more discreet places such as one’s finger or behind the neck as it is a more personal star. A small star can be done in any colour, and are usually a simple filled in star or outline.

AFTERCARE

No matter what star tattoo you choose to represents you and your spirituality, it is important that you take care of it. New tattoos are basically open wounds, so you need to make sure that that wound stays clean to prevent infection and also for safe healing.

DAY 1

Peel off the bandage, wash your hands with warm water, and gently wash your tattoo with your fingertips. Let it air dry, and keep your tattoo lotion free for 24 hours.

DAY 2 UNTIL HEALED

Wash it each day as you did on day 1 and let it air dry for at least 15 minutes before you cover it with clothing. After those 24 hours is when you want to keep your tattoo lubricated with a very thin layer of scent free moisturizer, lotion, or healing ointment in the morning, afternoon, and night. Continue this process for about 3 weeks as that is the average healing time for a new tattoo.
